Aussie traveling to Colorado for 3 months (Dec 2015)

Hi guys!
I'm planning a snowboarding trip to Colorado arriving December 2015 and returning to Australia end of February 2016.
I've read some other threads about Colorado, but being an Aussie who has never been to the US before, I can't say I understand the advice being given because I don't recognise any of the names (apologies for my spelling, I'm using Aussie/British spelling because it's what I'm used to).
So I thought I'd start my own thread asking for advice which is aimed at somebody who has next to no knowledge about snowboarding in Colorado or really any basic knowledge about US geography.
My snowboarding background
I started snowboarding in 2012. Since then I've been to New Zealand, Canada and Japan. I consider myself to be an intermediate/advanced rider. I particularly enjoy blacks and double blacks. I like riding steep off piste runs, especially tree runs, but groomers are also fun.
My tentative plan
I'm planning to arrive in the US around the start of November, either in San Francisco or Los Angeles and just experiencing American life for a month.
I'll then fly to Colorado at the start of December for the start of the snow season. I'll visit different resorts over 3 months. I'm hoping to visit maybe 12 different resorts (not sure if this is a reasonable number, but it's just an idea for now).
At the end of February I'll then fly back to Australia.
Questions
1. Which resorts should be on my 'must visit' list?
2. I'm hoping to spend less than $2500 on lift tickets over these 3 months. Is this possible if I plan to visit 12 different resorts? Which lift passes should I buy? I've been told to buy an Epic pass and potentially a Mountain Collective pass.
3. Is it worth including Utah/Idaho/Wyoming in my trip considering that I'll be there for 3 months?
4. As a solo traveler, I'm planning to stay in backpackers/hostels most of the time. Is this a good idea?
5. Do you guys have any other tips/advice for me?
