tips for traveling to japan

so i'm contemplating a 15/16 trip to japan. i know it's the land of pow, but i don't own a pow board. just a jones mountain twin. i may be over thinking this since i've ridden when it's snowing here in cali, colorado, and utah and haven't had issue, but is japan a different animal as far as snow conditions? i'm a groomers guy.
also for the locals, i've set my eyes on either nozawa onsen or hakuba. would love to get some input on the two. how's the nightlife, how are the resorts (up to date?), amount of runs, types of runs (surprisingly it's hard to find this info on their website), ease of getting around for someone who plans to take buses.
