Flying with avy backpacks in US

Some experiences traveling with avy airbags in the US...
First off, for all Euros: the US flight security regulations are way different from the ones over here; you may have zero problem with your backpack taking your plane at an European Airport, but when you have a connection flight in the US and have to go through the first security , you may run into a problem... and it depends a lot on the airport or individual security guy if or if not one and the same item is a potential danger.
We have Mammut avy backpacks, no pyrotechics, H2O cartridges with pressure gauges; we use the backpacks as hand luggage.
The first time flying with them, we were recommended by the manufacturer to keep the emptied cartridges in the backpack with all product description papers from them - cos like this it "would be obvious that they are harmless". Big mistake - even tho security at AK airports like Cordova or Anchorage didn't even bother to waste one glace at the packs or cartridges (the didn't even check if they are under pressure or empty), security in Seattle considered even the empty cartridges a big danger, no chance to negociate. Big hassle and delay.
So the next time, we stuffed the cartridges into the checked bags. The avy backpack as hand luggage were zero prob at the security in Minneapolis, but again, big delay in Seattle: this time, they were concerned with the airbag itself. The annoying security women was babbling something "there's a release, that's not allowed", (I very puzzled what she meant, and she just kept repeaing "release" and couldn't explain, what she meant with that... I assume she meant some kind of pyrotechnic trigger? which there wasn't...) and no matter how I tried to explain that the Mammut system works purely mechanical, which can be demonstrated and followed by eye, she wouldn't listen and continued with her "release" blabla and wouldnt let us through. By now, 4 security ppl were gathering around us, all very clueless and puzzled by the airbag... thanks god, their supervisor came, a nice elderly calm guy. He inspected the bag curiously, looked at me and asked "could you explain how this works, I haven't seen this before". So I did show him, he was listening, checked again, said that this is very interesting and no danger, and let us go through. Hurray! But again, 40min wasted at the security.
So next time, I even took the airbag out of the avy backpack and stuffed it into the checked bag. Finally, no problems with security, not even in Seattle :). K, now it's PITA to fiddle the airbag back into the backpack each time after a flight (with the PAS Mammut system, it's a cumbersome process), but I rather spend 30min in the lodge for this than having the risk to get such a hassle at the security, something confiszated or miss a flight connection.
Good luck and happy traveling!
