Anyone here riding after surgery for a spinal fusion?

For the last decade I've had back issues which worsened over the last two years to the point where I couldn't walk or stand for more than a few minutes without my knee locking up and pain down my right thigh. I tried everything I could to address the issue but pretty much everyone said surgery was the only way.
I finally had surgery last month and finally at the end of my initial recovery. I feel so much better than I did before surgery but the bone won't be fully there till around the 6 month mark so not sure what to expect after that - stiffness etc. Still, it feels great to be able to mobile again. I haven't walked for long distances for almost two years now besides commuting to work.
Anyway, my surgeon thinks that likely I should never ride again mostly because of potential falls. He thinks skiing would be the better route and that people have successfully gone back to skiing but I also don't know how. I would imagine that at least initially I will be more prone to falls since I would be learning if I decided to go this route.
I know that the days of me going into the backcountry or glades are probably out of question at this point but I'm curious if people have had a fusion and has successfully gone back to snowboarding.
Have you been riding after spinal fusion? Do you wear protective gear? Do you take less risks when riding? I can see myself never going out on less than ideal days on the east coast to avoid icy conditions
Details about surgery...
I had bulging at L3/L4 which was putting pressure on the nerves. That I could have likely resolved with building up my core but it was discovered sometime last year that I had stress fractures around the same area which was making things worse. Both were minimally invasive procedures so my recovery time was a lot faster than typical fusion
Saw two different trainers + two different pts + acupuncture / chiro + alternative medicine in the last few years. No matter what I did I would never get better beyond a certain level
