Boot stiffness?

I haven't boarded much in the past 10 yrs and I've been riding the same gear since 2001. I want to get new gear but the technology has changed a lot since I last went board/binding/boot shopping.
I like to cruise on groomers mainly. Green and blues mostly but I do want to get into butter tricks and switch riding. I also like powder when I can find it. I thought I might like a stiffer boot so I could ride fast on the groomers but I think that would make buttering harder. Any advice?
Are stiff boots mainly for racing and big mountain powder? I get that really soft boots are for jibbing and beginners. Just wondering if most guys here prefer mid or super stiff boots.
