Tuckerman's Ravine 5.3.15

d
[Edit: Oops - it was actually 5.2.15!]

I had been meaning to post this all week and finally got my pictures uploaded. I have been in NH for 10 years and every year I tell myself I need to go. I finally committed this year and May 3 was the day. The. Perfect. Day. The temp was forecast up in the 60s and delivered, there was shockingly NO wind, and there was still really good snow coverage. The only downside was that it was so warm the slopes were quite slushy and there was a lot of wet sluffing as you can see in the pictures.

I am relatively new to serious snowboarding so this was by far the steepest thing I have done. It really is steep - no fooling around! My buddy and I hiked and rode the Lip (looker's right) and Center Gully South (essentially the main headwall). The Lip is only super steep at the very top for a couple turns - the headwall is steep for quite a ways.

There must have been a thousand people up there enjoying the day. There were some great runs, including quite a few people dropping lines on the Icefall (crowd cheers), and some spectacular wipeouts (crowd roars). It was really a fantastic day. I know some people say they don't need to hike to ride, which is true, but if you love hiking and just being outdoors, a hike and ride in Tucks could be a day you'll never forget!

Crowded trail up.

Kenai hanging in the bowl.

Hiking The Lip.

View from the top of the headwall.

Getting late in the afternoon.

Me, dog, wife, friend. (Everyone should learn how to take pictures. If you are nice enough to take someone's picture, you should be nice enough to not cut off their feet and half their dog!)
