Help an idiot buy a new mountain bike

d
So, finally got the wife approval to break down and buy a proper modern mountain bike. Bought a cheap used hardtail off of CL last year and I've had some fun on it, but the geometry sucks for pedaling as it's more of a dirt jumped frame (Kona Stuff)and I've pretty much slaughtered the drivetrain. Gonna keep it around and convert it to a single speed for pump track fun.

Anyway... I want one bike to do it all. Cross country, trail, downhill, ride to the store to grab some beer, whatever. I'm buying ONE bike. I have neither the budget nor the storage space to build a quiver of bikes. Now, just like buying one snowboard for everything, I realize that will entail some sacrifices. I want full suspension and the budget is $2k or less. I gotta baby on the way this fall. $2k, that's it. No budget stretching. If it's $2100 and a screaming deal, I'm not interested. Gotta draw the line somewhere and $2k is the line in the sand. $1500 would be even better.

The reality is that 80% of my riding will probably be done around the Evergreen area. Say within an hour or so of Evergreen. I love the downhill side of things. Sorry, I don't get off on climbing. To me, climbing is fantastic exercise and a necessary evil for going down. I want a bike that climbs well, but that really excels on the down.

A big question for me is 29 vs. 650B. I've ridden 29ers and had a lot of fun on them, but that was on more open, flowy trails up in Montana. Seems like the majority of trails within an hour or so of me are a little tighter, twistier, and technical with Buffalo Creek being a notable exception. I'm kind of leaning toward 650B with a little longer travel right now.

Now, with all of that said, I've worked it out with a local shop to let me rent tomorrow and split the day with two bikes, one a 650B and the other a 29er. The 650B is a Santa Cruz Heckler I believe and the 29er is a Santa Cruz Tallboy. Probably going to take them over to Three Sisters and give them a whirl primarily just to compare a more all-mountain style 650B vs. a more XC style 29er.

Here are the primary two bikes I'm considering just from reviews, price, and checking them out in person at a couple of local shops. I'd love to buy local, but local shops can't touch these prices. If I decide to go with the 650B, there is one at a local shop on sale but still several hundred more. Not being all that bike savvy, it would be nice to have the support or a local shop. If that's the way in decide to go, I may give them a call tonsee what's the best they could do. I'm sure they wouldn't be able to match these prices, but maybe narrow the gap a little.

Anyway, here's the bikes:

Breezer Supercell Expert | 29 inch Full Suspension

Breezer Repack Expert Bike | 650b Full Suspension

Thoughts? Feedback? Concerns? Don't hold back. If I'm being a fucking idiot, tell me I'm being a fucking idiot and why
