How do you skate?

When skating up to lifts and at the base of the resort etc....which side of the board is your push foot on when its doing the pushing?
When my pushfoot is on my toes side it feels like kicking on a skate board which seems natural. The only issue is that my lead foot isnt pointing forward since its locked in...leaving an awkward hip imbalance when I push. I find that when I skate my board with my push foot on heelside, Its way more comfortabe on my hips, and i can easily lift my board with my lead foot so its weightless and doesnt catch on the tacky snow around lift lines.
