Rode this board for 2 consecutive days.
Height: 5'10"
Weight: 225
Board Length: 160cm
Stance width: 21 1/2"
Bindings: Burton Mission EST (2013) - Slight forward lean.
Found a good deal on a Custom X on Ebay last week and snatched up a Custom X. I was very hesitant because of all the hype about it being "unforgiving" and how 1 wrong move will have you tumbling down the mountain re-evaluating your life.
This board really wasn't all that intimidating, and im NOT a great rider. I started snowboarding in the beginning of last season, but I go fairly often (almost weekly during the east coast season). I don't carve hard or hit very high speeds.
I'm coming off of a Burton Blunt and Custom Flying V, which are considerably softer and less edgy because it's a rocker.
The Custom X felt great right off the bat. This was the first time i rode a traditional camber and loved it. It did take a LOT more leg power than my Blunt, so I was fatigued quicker. I couldnt cruise as easily with the Custom x, but the level of control felt like a big upgrade.
The conditions were very good - Im in the east coast so it's usually hard pack, but Jersey got around 10" of snow a day before I went so it was fairly powdery. I did feel like the board wasnt as great on powder as it was on the occasion hardpack spots though. I really had to jump and pivot to make it through the deeper stuff. So I wouldnt call the Custom X a great deep powder board, but if you're riding mainly hard pack with occasional powder days, then youll enjoy this board.
I did catch an edge 1 time that slammed me onto my stomach/chest but that was when I was riding the deeper stuff and I wasn't putting enough effort into getting around it. After that I was fine.
The board preformed pretty decently over more bumpy terrain. Higher speeds felt comfortable and the board did feel like it wanted to go fast all the time.
I took her off a few smaller jumps and it felt better than my Blunt and FV for sure, it just made me more stable as I landed. Did a few boxes as well and no complaints there, but my blunt did feel like it slid across boxes more smoothly.
It could be because I'm a bigger guy that the board felt a bit less demanding for me because it would flex easier due to my weight, but that's just a theory.
All in all, I'd say if you're looking into getting a Custom X, don't get intimidated by all the scary hype surrounding it. I'm barely an intermediate rider and I had a great time on this thing. But you DEFINITELY need to focus on your riding more and maneuvering it will take more out of you than a softer board. My legs were way more exhausted and sore after riding this than my Blunt or Flying V.
