Time for some more flex? Recs?

I've been riding a stiff freeride/big mountain board since my second year, nearly 12 years ago. First on a Dynastar Karma, their flagship board when they were sponsoring the Olympic team, but they got bought out by Quicksilver and the brand was shut down after one season. Great freakin' board, but super stiff and fast (as still have it, but haven't ridden it in years). My next set up was (is) a Never Summer Titan (wide, size 12 feet) and some Thirty Two 'One' boots and Flow NRX-FXR bindings -- all three are very stiff. I bought them because we were spending a lot of time in Tahoe and they were great for Kirkwood and Squaw and the backside of Alpine. I've ridden that NS Titan on damned near everything in Vermont, too, from Jay Peak powder in the trees to icy groomers at tiny hills like Butternut. I love it. Wicked fast, turns on a dime, really fun.
Here's why I ask about a "softer" board; I usually make it out about 30 times a season. Obviously, the 2009 NS Titan is getting old. The Flows are old, too, but I've been pretty strict about maintenance. The board is in good shape with only one minor ding, and I've replaced the cables and screws and latches on the bindings. BUT...my first trip out this year was at Sugarbush over New Years. It was super hard-pack, a light coating of man-made sugar on bulletproof. I think I really fucked up my knee. Never had a problem with my knees before, but it's been a couple of weeks now and it's just starting to feel better.
Do you think the board/binding/boot combo was too stiff for the conditions? Or maybe I just pushed too hard for first day of the season. Would adding another set-up be a help in crappy conditions like that? Maybe a board with more flex, more all-mountain? And if so, any suggestions? I've had my eye on an Arbor (none in particular, I just like 'em) and would also seriously consider another NS board. Never ridden anything but a traditional camber board.
Sorry for the long post; thanks for any advice you can offer.
