Buying my first snowboard, could use some advice (beginner)

d
Hi all,

I have done a decent amount of research and browsing but I'm still kind of intimidated by all the snowboards available. So forgive me if I'm being a noob.

I started snowboarding last year using hand-me-down equipment that was seriously ill-suited for me. A Burton snowboard made in the 90's with crummy, loose bindings and crummy boots. Much too short and too narrow. Went twice last year. Started to get the hang of it but still felt really uncomfortable and hesitant. At the end of the second session I hopped on my buddy's 2013 Salomon Drift Rocker and it was a world of difference, holy crap, this is seriously fun now.

Went twice this year again, both times borrowing my buddy's Drift Rocker, and I feel like I am getting pretty decent. From what I have been reading, I may be ruddering too much, but not sure. My friends aren't really familiar with the terminology and, well, I'm not either. But I can carve on my heels and toes, make pretty quick transitions, fling the rear end around a bit. Not comfortable going switch, I might tackle practicing that next time out. By the end of the day I was hitting the black diamonds at Snow Trails with ease. Yes I know black diamond is a very, very relative term, hahaha...

I live in Ohio. Last year went with experienced friends to Peak and Peak and Holiday Valley. This year went to Mad River Mountain and Snow Trails x2 and I was the only snowboarder in the group, not counting my gf who has yet to progress beyond falling leaf. Doubt I make it out to "serious" destinations out west much if at all so these are the types of places I will typically hit...usually groomed and pretty packed. Can't see myself getting into big jumps or rails, I don't want to hurt myself too badly. I barely hit a few things in the terrain park this weekend and ate it a few times...I can see myself hitting on some smaller kickers/table tops though in the future, seems fun. Really I can't ever see myself getting to insane speeds either. Never broken a bone in my body and don't intend to.

I tend to over-analyze and over-research all my busying decisions when hundreds of dollars are at stake, and inevitably end up regretting whatever I get. Alls I know now is that I really, really enjoy my buddy's Drift Rocker.

I am 6', 200 lbs and the Drift Rocker I have been using is only a 154. Bought secondhand size 12 boots (Vans) that fit pretty well, maybe 1/2 size too large, though they are a bit too tight on the tops of my feet and ever so slightly loose at my heels.

I found a new 2014 159 Drift Rocker that I am leaning towards now just because I know I like it. I read some reviews about the Drift Rocker and how it feels skateboardy/kicktaily and I totally get that and I love it, though I've never skateboarded. Don't know if I'm having fun cause of the board or because I'm learning how to snowboard though, hah :dunno:

Then I spoke with a more experienced rider today who pointed me away from a rocker setup, and showed me a Ramp Tumbleweed at a great deal. I appreciate that it is a high-quality board but I'm not sure it is the right one for me. My biggest concern is catching an edge and eating it hard, unexpectedly, so I think a rocker might be better even though I don't plan on hitting rails or anything. Also, I just really like the look of the Drift Rocker I found for sale, hah.

Thoughts? I am absolutely open to other suggestions, these are just two on my radar right now, and like I said, leaning towards Drift Rocker because I know I like it (and I would one-up my buddy :dance1:)
