Beginner buying advice

Hi folks,
I'm a bit lost and could use some good advice from seasoned snowboarders.
I just started snowboarding last season and finally feel like I'm getting my legs. I rented a few times and then picked up an older, used Burton Blunt. It's okay, but I can't say that I totally love it. I would like to get a new board. I just have no idea what to get.
A good friend is pushing the Burton Custom Flying V on me. . . . I'm not really sure why, other than the fact the he has a Custom himself.
I will primarily be skiing in the northeast U.S. Mostly in the Catskills (Windham) with occasional trips to Vermont, Lake Placid, etc. And I don't see myself doing much park riding as I'm 37 years old and most likely past my braver days.
Does anyone have any thoughts on a board that will be forgiving, potentially fast when I want it be and okay with some park riding if I ever feel the need?
Thanks,
Chris
