Jay Peak March 15 to 18

d
As my daughter had two weeks off for March break, we made the most of it. Had to go down to pick her up, so you stop off at a hill on your way home. With my 17 year old nephew in tow, we arrived at Jay around 1:30 pm Sunday and it is snowing. We are there on a three day ticket, but they let you get on the hill on your arrival day, no charge. :jumping1:

We get in a couple of hours on late afternoon conditions. Pretty pushed, some "stay awake" hard pack, but we get a fix and are pumped for the next day.

The Jay Cloud delivers. It :snowing: pretty much all night. We awake to 8 inches of fresh. :crazy7:

Needless to say, Monday morning is bliss. The three of us are so pumped. We each brought two decks, so out come the powder toys and we have an absolute blast. Now I have never been on a big hill the morning of what we learn is one of the best dumps of the season. There are some minor lineups that morning and I make a note to myself about this being somewhat unusual given how quiet the resort was the night before. You have to remember that there is virtually no accommodation off site at Jay. How then so many people..... stupid me; Powder Hounds. Looking carefully at the crowd, I realized that the majority were not "guests" as we were, but the locals who had clearly phoned in sick that morning. It was just fine as there was no shortage of snow to go around.

The next two days were exceptional as well. Bluebird day two and day three was flat light to start, but the sun came back out after lunch. Simply divine.

For those who have never been, Jay is a great resort with a huge variety of terrain. From the steep of the Chutes off the Tram, to Upper CanAm and Upper River Quai, along with almost everything off the Jet Triple, there is excellent expert terrain available. There are two distinct beginners areas for those just starting and there is some outstanding intermediate terrain, but not an abundance of it. They even have different levels of Glades so if you have never had glade experience, this is a fantastic place to check it out.

One thing that happens at Jay is a strong breeze / wind hammers the area serviced by the Flyer ( Freezer ). On our last day they never even loaded the chairs on the Flyer ( unique in that the lifties take every chair off the Flyer every night and reload them back on early the next morning) due to the wind. However, the Bonaventure quad was running and it allows you access to almost all of the terrain that the Flyer services. Due to the wind, we stayed protected over at mid mountain under the Bonaventure for the morning, but as the sun came out later in the day we decided to run something over by the Flyer. OMG, talk about night and day conditions, Everything over by the Flyer was wind stripped, hard, icy and nasty. A far cry from the nice conditions over under the Bonaventure. Needless to say one run and we were back mid mountain. Local knowledge baby.

With the Canadian dollar in the tank right now, being able to pay for half our stay in Canadian currency accepted at par was a huge factor in why we went there. However, we had been a few years ago when the first big phase of development had taken place and were very impressed then. The water park is fantastic, the rink is there and they have added a hotel with rates lower than the Tram House or Hotel Jay. We were equally impressed our second time there.

If you have never made the trip, Jay is worth the drive that takes you almost to the Canadian border. There is something for everyone both on and off the hill, but when the cloud delivers, it is outstanding.

There was a thread earlier this season about giving up on the east. :blahblah: :cloud:

Stupid thread.
