New rider. Need help.

Ok so I'm completely new to snowboarding and I am looking to purchase my own board. I'm 6'3 150lbs I've been told by a friend not to go smaller than a 160cm board. But I've also read that height isn't very important when choosing a board. Also my shoe size is 10-10.5 idk how that translates to boot size but they said I definitely shouldn't get a wide board. So I guess what I'm looking for is what would be a good size range for me? Any brands to stay away from? Any and all help is appreciated. Thanks in advance
