Does the Board Make that Much Difference?

i decided to start snowboarding at the very tail end of last season. I was given a Burton Nugget 134 (meant to be ridden 10cm short) from a friend and have paired it with Burton Escapades and Ride Candence boots.
At this point I am feeling fairly confident in my riding except for one thing; the board sometimes throws me around redirecting me. I seldom fall when this happens but because of it I am hesitant to pick up any real speed. A friend of mine who has a Nug says his does the same to him (he's an advanced rider) and suggested I buy another board to use until I gain more confidence.
Will a different board really make a difference? Or, do I just need to continue to ride this one until I gain more confidence in it (and me)?
Thoughts? Personal experiences?
Best,
E
PS female, groomers only, 112lbs (with leg on; I'm an amputee), 5'2", east coast
