Whistler in mid April?

Sup guys!
I've been trying to figure out is Whistler still enjoyable in mid April (11-19 to be exact)? I tried asking my good ol' friend Google for some information but there's just too much contradiction everywhere so I was hoping to find some kind locals/people who frequent Whistler here?
The deal is I'm living in Japan (not Japanese, though) so I would be, to put it nicely, a little bit disappointed should I go to Whistler just to find out there's barely any snow and/or only ice ;-) On the other hand Whistler is the easiest for me and my friend as that's basically the only place to which they organize tours from here...
I'm an (above)intermediate snowboarder and I'm looking for everything: back country riding, pow (probably not possible in April I guess), park, some nice steeps etc. Well I'm not looking for ice :-)
Also I was wondering what kind of lodging should I expect? Here most of the hotels are really close to the lifts (either they are literally in front of them or 5-10 min walk away), I'm guessing it's a bit different in Canada?
Ah also I noticed there's some festival/contests/whatever in Whistler between 10-19.04, does that mean it will be unbelievably crowded?
