Jib Rail

I have a piece of 1x8x10' treated wood beam, I was going to use it as a rail to 50/50 on and just kinda play around on. Do I need a top surface for it or would the wood be just find to slide on. I know some people talked about HDPE and Polycarbonate, but I was hoping to play around on this thing tonight. Any advice?
